Tony Hall ; The Future of the BBC. Licence fee to stay.
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:50:49 PM »

Can be listened to here.

http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/culture-media-and-sport-committee/news/future-of-the-bbc-ev-session/

On Tuesday 15 July, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee continues its inquiry into the future of the BBC.  The Committees penultimate session on the BBC questions former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Dame Tessa Jowell MP, who presided over the last Charter review.  The Committee also takes evidence from the Director-General of the BBC and members of his Executive Board.

I will be back later with more details.

Some bullet points, in meantime.

Tony Hall, together with James Purnell make it clear that they intend the licence fee to remain.

There is no doubt that they blame the disaster of the last fee settlement hashed together by Mark Thompson and Jeremy Hunt with no consultation and in covert manner is the problem.

It was said that there is now UNLIKELY to be decrimilisation of the fee.

Also it will be possible that some catch up services will be charged for.

Lord Hall says that following the next election he will set out his stall regarding the detail of how the BBC will approach the next charter.

Tessa Jowell, before him is very clear that the Trust is there to represent the interests of the licence fee payer and not to be a cheerleader. She should know because she was the architect . Shame she never told Patten.
