Love In Recovery, comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous

A rather unusual setting for a comedy drama but the writing, direction and especially the actors - Sue Johnston, John Hannah, Eddie Marsan, Rebecca Front, Paul Kaye and Julia Deakin (along with the roles they play) - make this drama series one that can't really fail to deliver. There are some lovely nuances and the characters all build up as each participant brings their story to the group.

The play puts you nicely as a fly on the wall.

It's lovely stuff. And I'm looking forward to the final episode.

ps I hope Sue Johnston and Rebecca Front do more and more radio plays.
(edited to add: and all the other cast too of course - nice work)

Wonderful, thanks for the heads-up Albert, this time of night is usually the only time I'm sat in front of the telly catching Newsnight and I've missed all these.  Now listened to the first and halfway through the second, this is quality radio.  Not sure if you've noticed but in the quieter moments you can actually hear the non-talking characters breathing, not sure if that's deliberate, must assume so and it adds real atmosphere.

Well I hadn't consciously noticed, darcy, but I've just listened to the series again (apart from the last one of course). Yes, there are indeed many incidental sounds in the background, just as you would imagine in a multi-functional building (eg. maybe a game of badminton in the adjoining hall?). And as for the incident with Julie's husband in the car outside - that was just perfection.

Perhaps 'fly on the wall' isn't the appropriate description. I think this drama puts you in a seat, as one of the group.

I would guess that when this series was put together every possible detail has been carefully sculptured because when you have such actors giving it their all, then everything else - everything else - has to be to a similar standard.

As the preamble says:

There are funny stories, sad stories, stories of small victories and milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and stories that you really shouldn't laugh at - but still do.

I found myself laughing at those sad stories then almost crying as the reality of the events sank in.

I usually like to listen to my radio plays whilst doing something else (I am a builder these days). This series, I just sat with full attention.

Hi, Pete Jackson here, I wrote the series 'Love in Recovery'. Just wanted to say how glad I am you're enjoying it. Credit for the great sound has to go to our sound recordist Jerry Peal who's fantastic and did a brilliant job recreating the atmosphere of an AA meeting room (we also recorded it in an AA room to add authenticity). Again, thrilled you're enjoying it. Hope you like ep 6

Hi Pete, wonderful; that you have replied here. I can't explain my surprise and excitement this morning!

I did a search on Twitter. Wow! Nice to see there are so many people feel the same way about this series. Just now on the BBC website, I also managed to catch the Claudia Winkleman interview with you and Rebecca Front (2 days left to listen). The interview answered many of the questions that have been nagging me, such as how did you manage to get this 'dream cast', did they have to be persuaded (I love how Rebecca Front answered that one in the interview).

As asked by Claudia Winkleman, I also wondered could this drama go on TV. The answer is obviously "yes" but of course there are reasons why perhaps this needs to remain a gem of Radio. Whatever, I hope there is going to be more.

The sound engineer - more than a 'recordist' surely! - Jerry Peal deserves a huge credit - for example, I just listened to the clip from the interview show when Danno is outside smoking and talking loudly to his mate!

Thanks for brightening up my day and for joining the forum.

Hi Albert. No thanks necessary! It's a pleasure to meet you. Yes, people really have taken this series to their hearts, which is thrilling for me as it's such a personal show.
The cast are truly amazing, and they were all brilliant to work with. Obviously I'd heard it all in my head many many times as I was writing it but to hear it brought to life by such great actors was wonderful.
I think one of the things that Jerry the sound engineer (more than a recordist, quite right) brought out so well, with the noises from adjoining rooms and outside etc, was the sense that in this grotty little rooms lives change and people reveal such intimate things, but just beyond the four walls life carries on as normal. There's a moment, I think in ep 1 where Fiona (Rebecca Front) reaches a sad moment in her story and a passing group of girls break out into laughter that I think illustrates what I mean. I love that moment. And yes, it was great to have Danno outside undermining the whole process from the outset by screaming through the window (his mate was played by me.. we'll get a proper actor next time).
I'd love to transfer to TV and discussions are taking place, but I'd also love to do more for radio (I'd never done any before and thoroughly enjoyed it). I shall keep you posted. Again, thanks so much for listening and I'm really chuffed you like it! Thanks. Pete

Well, I've caught up now with all 5 and hi Mr. Jackson!  Certainly wasn't expecting you to pop in, but thanks for stopping by.

It's quite something that within 90 minutes you, the cast and your sound artiste have managed to paint the characters and pieces of their lives so well, it's proper thoughtful radio, thank you all.

Hello everybody

My name . . . . . my name is Albert . . .

I am . . . I am privileged to have been part of your group for the past 5 weeks.

I have listened intently. It has been wonderful. It has been sad. It has been funny. Very funny. And interesting. And thought provoking.

I have laughed. I have cried. And I have laughed again.

Thank you for allowing me with you.

Yep.  Love the opening Marion/Andy exchange, a giggle if you've not heard the previous episodes but a - excuse the term - lol if you've travelled with Andy to the hall each week.  What am I saying, I suppose that this is the icing and cherry on the top of the cake of episodes one to five.  Touching, sweet, funny and flipping good radio.

Tuesday sees the start of the second series. 11:00pm and a half hour slot. (The first series episodes were 15 minutes)

I'm looking forward to my half hour, sat in on this AA meeting. It really is like being in there with them. Not a fly on the wall as such, more like a fly, a friendly fly, sat on one of the chairs with them, listening intently as the events unfold.

Series 2 has surpassed my expectations already. The half hours have just whizzed by and 'taken me to another place' as the vernacular might go. And that 'other place' is sat in the AA room with these great actors. They obviously enjoy this particular drama and the rapport between them all is beautiful. It must have been great fun to be involved.

I have listened to the two broadcasts so far twice each, just to pick up on any details I might have missed first time round. There have been some lovely timings, essential to any drama but especially where there is comedy involved, but of course Love In Recovery is a whole lot more than comedy...
