Ofcom to replace The BBC Trust
« on: June 26, 2015, 10:23:44 AM »

So now we are told Ofcom will be taking over from The BBC Trust

Is this the beginning of the end, or will it be good for the BBC and the licence payer ?.

Hi Mel,

Not really sure what to say. you were , of course right that the BBC faces a hostile Tory government as both sides enter into debate about the future of the BBC. Osbourne is already talking about the BBC financing the free licence fee for over 75s. BBC could not survive that.

The Trust was supposed to represent licence fee payers. But has struggled to make it's position clear over the last few years.
It failed hopelessly over very serious governance issues. Excessive pay offs, DMI and the investigation into Saville etc. I have not read any defensive statement for or from the Trust. Which says it all really. It was a good idea, but ruined by too many staff not bothering to work out what they were for.

The BBC is special it represents a long history of independant public broadcasting for us the public. It is unique in that and we should not let the memory of bad managers turning it into a gravy train blight that. It is worth fighting for.

I am sorry that I have vanished for so long, I am not well.

Hello Tiger, Im so sorry to hear your unwell lets hope things get better for you.

Yes the trust was always supposed to represent the licence payer but Im not sure if Ofcom can do better.

Going by Ofcom history and the mess they made with local independent radio allowing the big radio groups swallowing up small local stations and turning them into boring sanitized sounding audio wallpaper. Each one sounding the same.

Lets hope the BBC can remain as it is because we need it more than ever now. Its the first place most people around the world  tune into for news & information.

I very much agree.

And with other stuff said here too.  Since this was announced we've also heard how the BBC are going to open up radio programme production so that 60% of their output will be made outside of the BBC.  Yesterday it transpired they'd lost coverage of the Olympics after 2022 and today the Trust rubber stamped the decision to put BBC 3 online.  And this is all before charter renewal has begun.  No one should underestimate the situation the BBC finds itself in, unfortunately it's sometimes difficult to distinguish between the attacks from the outside and the lame, inept, out-of-touch management running the place.
