Some press discussion today.

This from The Guardian

This from the causic Janet Street Porter in The Independent(pretty harsh and I certainly do not agree with all she says, but some is worth reading)

The new appointment for DG is now being openly debated, so..

We have the headhunters gesturing, and comment made that it will go to Helen Boeden, or Caroline Thomson or Tim Davie or other such insiders, who really have not impressed at all..did they come up with anything strong about DQF?.. no not at all they agreed that BBC local radio should be cut? fantastic understanding of public service broadcasting demonstrated there? not!

I suppose they were busy with not taking taxis to notice that they could have made a difference if they had expressed an opinion about local journalism etc..rubbish.

So do they deserve the position without public debate?

It is no secret that other names are now being put forward..Quentin Letts, PD James, Anne McElvoy..may be a bit of sauce, but I would say keep those nominations coming. It is time for someone with a sensible hat to take charge of the BBC that we want to protect.

And indeed it would be quite right for newspapers to run polls about public opinion on the new appointment. In fact they represent a public body and perhaps they should be elected by the public that they will represent and who pays for them?
