Hmmm, Nick Robinson attempts to prempt Leveson, and how and who must be in charge of the press.
Some interesting contributions, but I do not think I really heard from anyone on the panel any care of what the public now demands, and wants and I think most of those on the panel have failed to protect the public.
The facts are that there are some criminal and disgusting elements of the press at the very highest in terms of power, who were not stopped, they intruded and dabbled in peoples souls and that was considered acceptable. It was acceptable for years and years and years, nevermind the fact that they brutalised the McCanns etc but it halted with Milly's phone..and then there was of course the thousands and thousands of other innocent people that would apply to, who may have been aplogised to on page 45..in small writing. So the PCC did not work for the public, because it was controlled by the press. or was simply stupid of the issues.
So that failed.
And there is absolutely no way now that this can be decided in Parliament. Which is a terrible blow for our democracy. We elect MPs to protect us and they had to remain capable of defendng that ethic in terms of being able to robustly counter wrong doing in the press. Instead a key few destroyed public trust in terms of private interest. And until Jeremy Hunt is removed that public perception rightly remains.
So democracy has failed.
So, if an individual felt that their invasion was such that it was illegal, they would turn to the police, who in turn were probably being paid to divulge personal information to the press.
So that failed.
Now some of that is being put right. But it would be very wrong to say that (hopefully)the public interest in this is waning from many interested parties..because it is not..despite that hope that it will go away.
The solution now lies in a public consultation that is completely transparent. And will involve Leveson acting impartially to that consultation along side his inquiry.
A jury will be needed and that will be public opinion.
And I hope the outcome will be a publicy elected Press standards committee.
That applies integrity and recognises the importance of journalism as investigation, without limit and deals with those who are pretenders to that name.
moaning minnie:
Who would you want to see voted in by the public?
Tiger:
Yes, well that would be the public.
It would be a body, divorced from politics and the press. It would be a civil organisation, with experts invited from politics and the media and those in charge would be there by public consent and public vote.
It would need to be overseen by a judicary, and would have to be accountable.
It could be funded by the lottery..or the stopping of the privacy bill(which is set to cost billions) or top slicing the licence fee(if Hunt can do that for his car crash local TV then the public can) and it can combine with the BBC Trust(which like the PCC has had problems with getting an ethos together and phaffs around with complaints about Anne Robinson!)
In conclusion, elected polititions have failed to protect the public, the PCC with its press members in charge failed ..so it is time for the public to do it themselves, in exasperation.
R4 addict:
Car crash local tv? What's that all about?
