The Mayfair Set - Adam Curtis Documentary Series
(1/1)
darcysarto:
This series from 1999 is a fascinating watch, next time it's raining where you are, settle down and watch this BAFTA winning documentary about the movers from The Clermont Club in Mayfair. Colonel David Sterling of the SAS, James Goldsmith, Jim Slater, Tiny Rowland and a few others.
Rupert Murdoch is also mentioned, almost as a throw away, as with James Goldsmith and some other un-named interested parties, they funded attacks on the peace campaigns in the 80's. However, this is just an aside!
What this series unfurls to show is how a few people used the stock markets to bring industry to it's knees. Made in 1999, it signposts where we are today in 2012 and perhaps more worryingly where we may end up.
The episodes are as follows
1. Who Pays Wins – The opening episode, Who Pays Wins, focuses on Colonel David Stirling.
2. Entrepreneur Spelt S.P.I.V. – The rise of Jim Slater who became famous for writing an investment column in The Sunday Telegraph under the nom de plume of The Capitalist.
3. Destroy the Technostructure – This episode recounts the story of how James Goldsmith became one of the richest men in the world.
4. Twilight of the Dogs – By the 80s, the day of the buccaneering tycoons was over. Tiny Rowland, James Goldsmith and Mohammed Al Fayed were the only ones who were not finished.
Due to the restrictions of Youtube, the programmes have been broken down into 10 minute pieces which play one after the other. I can guarantee you will learn some things you didn't know, so it's got to be worth a watch right?
