Victoria took Mark Byford to task this morning regarding his massive payoff, and she did it brilliantly.

He was there to talk about his recent book first, which is called "On The Make" it was about this man with really huge pockets that found a way to keep them full almost all the time with public money, in fact the ending was quite moving when he clearly ,a bit choked .explained how he had to get a new pair of trousers with more pockets.

Then Victoria took him to task about his massive payoff. He was clear that he was NOT greedy and it was all because he had worked at the BBC for 30 years.(nb anyone else working at the BBC for 30 years! you better get some pockets) He sounded sad and said he really did not want to lose his job(sob!) but heck it was all about saving money.(translation poor Auntie would no longer have to pay his massive salary and fly him off to football matches and pay for him to have a purpose built luxury pad overlooking the pitch, it had to be extra large because of the pockets) And it was important that job cuts came from the top tier(laugh!)

And as to Mark Thompson(Mark B's bf) saying that Byford had to be paid an extra half million to keep him focussed, this was because Byford had to do a thing called a "handover" I have never heard of that happening when you leave a job before, it clearly is work half a million(nb anyone leaving a job at the Beeb take note if you have to do a "handover"

Finally Byford said even though he worked at BBC Leeds and for 30 years at the BBC he NEVER EVER heard anything about Savile? He must be one of the only people in the country apart from Mark Thompson then...

AND NO he is not giving back any of the money, it is all his and the pockets would look silly otherwise.

At the top of the show book bit goes on for about a year..

Well you have to take the hat off to the fella for the sheer cheek of wanting to flog his book to the licence fee paying public, that certainly takes a level of arrogance given the history.  But it should be remembered, in the interest of balance that he only received the most amount of money that he wasn't contractually entitled to, others received less than him.

Perhaps if anyone reading this would like to take a couple of years off to travel and research what their own relatives were doing during the war Mark might be willing to make a donation of his over-payment for your troubles... or perhaps not.

Amazingly, in part answer to the question of why he will not pay any of the money back he offers;

..I've come to talk about something that in the week of remembrance is a very different subject matter..

Victoria was superb.  Bill Rogers on his blog post entitled Not Greedy has some great pictures of Victoria as she listened to Marks book plug.  On the subject of Savile, Bill also reminds us that Mark's dad, Sir Lawrence, was responsible for the inquiry into why it took so long to catch the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe. Savile was a person of interest to the West Yorkshire force during their investigation - two victims were found not far from Savile's flat in Roundhay, one of them, Irene Richardson, a matter of 300 yards away, in 1977.

It has to be recorded that most press covered this story in the aftermath.. Very well done to 5 Live! They absolutely nalied it.

It is hoped that if Big Pockets conducts further interviews, Victoria will be the template.

I guess not quite what Byford was hoping for.? Maybe he might consider donating his book sale money? If not to the BBC that he has damaged but perhaps to the rememberance charities.?

I still find it difficult to believe that he knew nothing about Savile? Really? His father was a very important policeman in West Yorks, we know that they had reports about Savile.

And I take what Bill Rogers has said in his blog, like him I am not going to say more.

BUT the question  about the BBC remains relevant. For example, given that Children In Need is about to launch. It can not be denied that those organisers in the BBC had to bar Savile from the event in the past. We know that and we know that they were told not to make a report. (Oh and there was the Louis Theroux interview etc at the time.)

This is a high level BBC event and surely that would have gone to the very top.

There are many reasons why Byford and Thompson must have known, the question has to be why are they saying they knew nothing? The public are not stupid.
